An alternative approach on Green Energy
Nowadays a long discussion takes place among experts regarding energy production, the need for environmentally friendly power production and Green Energy. Unfortunately, Green Energy is still expensive and the environmentally sustainable power production is realised only in wealthy countries. The alternative is Smart Energy Consumption,: the reduction of the energy consumption is so high that the facility simulates to a Virtual Green Power Plant. UW Tech GmbH, in collaboration with our key partner EnTrade, provides a combination of different solutions that leads to our scope which is lower power consumption. These solutions are:
Saving Energy in Lighting
By replacing conventional lamps with LED lamps:
LED lamps can save (up 70%) electricity consumed in lighting lamps, producing the same or better quality lighting effect.
By installing and / or configurating a monitoring & management system:
Many times there is such a waste of energy in lighting because of poor system design. By installing a monitoring & lighting management system is possible to reduce energy costs with time attendance control or lighting dimming (dimming) techniques and in the same time to provide better maintenance and monitoring of problems like burnt bulbs, wrong functionality that reduces the lifetime of the lamps etc.
Saving Energy in Drive Systems
With power compensation: In most industrial systems the correction of power factor with capacitors (that increases the cosφ to 0.9-0.95 levels) leads to:
- Significant reduction in energy consumption (up to 26%)
- Significant reduction of voltage and current harmonics (up to 90%)
- Improvement of the Power Factor (PF)
- Increase of service life and reduction of maintenance and replacement costs of electronic devices, air conditioning systems, motors and lamps which are connected to the system
By redesigning process & applying smart algorithms: In most systems it is possible to redesign the operation of drive systems in order to optimize their energy consumption while sustaining the same output results. To do this, installing controllers and PLC system with a new system operation algorithm is necessary. The basic idea is the withdrawal of the model “start – operation” mode of the system and the establishment of adaptive operational model.
By installing inverters / soft starters: In old pumping stations or drive systems in general, there are no start up devices and as a result energy consumption is significant (due to start up currents). Using Inverter or soft starter, the phenomena can be reduced considerably (to 25%) with significant effect to the energy consumption due to the correction of the operating voltage frequency and the reduction of the number of starts of the drive system.
Energy Saving Through Heat Recovery
By installing heat exchangers: For plants with exhaust gases, engine coolers or condensation, heat recovery can be achieved from these sources in order to serve the thermal needs of the plant.
By installing ORC systems (Organic Rankine Cycle): In cases where waste heat is significant, ORC turbines that turn waste thermal energy into electricity or motion depending on the system requirements can be installed
Energy Saving in Buildings
By installing building management systems (BEMS):
Integrated building energy management systems offer significant advantages such as detailed monitoring of energy consumption, making it possible to implement measures for energy saving.
By applying ISO energy audit and management system:
With the ISO50001: 2011 system, a continuous recording of the energy profile and the performance of saving techniques selected regularly is achieved.
Saving Energy Using Renewable Energy Sources(RES)
Using the net-metering technique: By this technique, RES systems can be installed whose energy production is counterbalanced with the energy consumption. Considering that the cost of kWh from RES could be up to 15% lower than the grid supply price, it is clear that economic advantages can be achieved.
With autonomous electrical systems: Because of the reduced price of the electricity produced from RES, a positive financial result (up to 20% savings depending on the systems’ operations) can be achieved by using an autonomous (island) mode for the electrical systems and disconnecting them from the central grid.
